Bio fertilizer: a potential market in China

CCM believes that it is a great time for bio fertilizers to develop in China due to bad influences of the overuse of chemical fertilizers. It is predicted that 14 million tonnes of bio fertilizers will be applied in China in the near future.

Action Plan of Zero Growth on Chemical Fertilizers by 2020 published by China’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) in February has pointed out that chemical fertilizers have been overused in the production of China’s agriculture today.

China has produced 16% of the total grain in the world, but has applied 31% of the total chemical fertilizers during the production, according to biotech.org, an informative portal for China’s bio-technology.

Half of the applied volumes of chemical fertilizers in China can be totally reduced based on the standard applied proportion between grain and fertilizers.

The misuse of agrochemicals has worsened the fields, which has led to the spread of soil-borne diseases, and the decrease, acidification, hardening, salinization and excess of heavy metals of the soil organic matters. All of these problems would directly affect the safety of the agriculture products.

Moreover, most of the Chinese farmers focus too much on the basal dressing during fertilizing rather than the top dressing, said Professor Zhang Fusuo of School of Resources and Environment, China Agricultural University.

“The overuse in the basal dressing is a big problem in China” commented Professor Zhang.

“It took the farmers in British 20 years to decrease the dose in basal dressing from 90% to 20%. China needs more time, perhaps 100 years.”

A golden chance for bio fertilizers

Action Plan of Protection and Improvement on the Field Quality published by MOA on November is a detailed version of Action Plan of Zero Growth on Chemical Fertilizers by 2020. It emphases that China needs to adjust the application structure of fertilizers, increase the efficiency in applying fertilizers and develop the new fertilizers.

With the beneficial policies, CCM believes that it is a great chance for the new type of fertilizers to develop.

Among all the new fertilizers, bio fertilizers have the most potential, according to CCM. Compared to chemical fertilizers, bio fertilizers have its unique advantages in reducing the application volumes of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, increasing the yield of crops and improving the quality of crops.

“China has the most need to develop and apply bio fertilizers than any other country in the world” said Li Jun, Director of Bio Fertilizer Supervision and Inspection Center of MOA.

“The long-term application of the chemical fertilizers has caused a serious of problems in agriculture production: both the soil productivity and fertilizer utilization have decreased; the soil quality has declined; the safety of the agriculture products becomes more and more serious.”

“To solve these problems, applying bio fertilizers is the key” stated Li.

Farmers can apply only a small amount of bio fertilizers to get good results on in the crops. Bio fertilizers can activate the soil and improve the efficiency of fertilizers. Also, bio fertilizers are quite functional. It can work as a decomposer to decompose the straw and toxic or harmful substances in the soil. It also serves as a transformer to transform the nutrients such as phosphorus and calcium.

Compared to chemical fertilizers, bio fertilizers can increase 20% of the crop yield and decrease 20% of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides application, according to Biotech.org.

The application volumes of bio fertilizers in China will reach 10% of that of chemical fertilizers, with the volume of 14 million tonnes in China in the near future, stated by an industry insider.

With the support in the 13th Five-year plan from the government, the volumes of bio fertilizers will occupy about 15% of the total fertilizers in China and it will be applied in over 26.7 million ha of fields.

Problems in bio fertilizers

Though the development of bio fertilizers has a promising future, CCM considers that it will face a series of problems in promoting and managing.

According to some farmers, the input of applying bio fertilizers is high than that of chemical fertilizers in the first 2 years. The input of the bio fertilizers is 5% to 10% higher than that of chemical fertilizers in every 0.067 ha.

Moreover, the extra spending in the bio fertilizers is a lot. The farmers need to pay extra money to hire people to produce the formula fertilizers.

For most of the farmers, the short-term high input of bio fertilizers makes it difficult for them to give up on the chemical fertilizers.

At the meanwhile, though it is required by MOA since 1996 that the products of bio fertilizers should be inspected and registered by MOA, a lot of products haven’t been registered, which has caused the results that some products with substandard quality still enter the market.
