The ex-works prices of 2,4-D 96% technical and 2,4-D formulations in China, such as 2,4-D amine salt 720g/L SL, kept a downtrend from 2012 to 2015, which can be explained by the occurred oversupply. This is backed up by the fact, that in 2012–2015, about 8,500 t/a new capacity has been introduced in the 2,4-D industry in China. However, the demand for this herbicide has remained stable during the aforementioned years, which caused the oversupply situation.
In future years, the ex-works price of 2,4-D in China is predicted by industry experts to continue rising in the near future, due to the environmental protection pressure by the Chinese government, which is likely to cause increasing production cost. Moreover, costly production waste disposal measurements will drive the costs even higher. Actually, the price has rebounded to some extent in the second half of 2016.The ex-works price of 2,4-D 96% technical in December 2016 was USD2,271.00/t, a significant increase compared to the price at USD1,844.00/t in January 2016. Also, players in the 2,4-D industry seemed to reach a consensus on that the ex-works price would keep rising for months because of additional environmental protection costs and less qualified 2,4-D producers in China, resulting in less supply.
The number of new registrations can show market trends of herbicides in China to some extent. 2,4-D, dicamba, glufosinate-ammonium, mesotrione and flumioxazin are the herbicides which have been registered the most times in 2016
